Why Palmer Divide Soccer Club Is Moving to School-Year Age Groups In the Fall of 2026
Palmer Divide Soccer Club is transitioning from birth-year age groupings to school-year–based age groups in alignment with evolving best practices in youth sports and long-term player development.
The switch to school-grade (August 1 cut-off) age grouping is required by U.S. Soccer, the governing body for youth soccer in the United States, and all CSA member clubs, including ours, must follow these new guidelines beginning Fall 2026.
This change means players will now be grouped based on their school grade year (August 1–July 31) rather than calendar birth year.
What does this mean for your child?
- Starting Spring 2026, Palmer Divide will begin implementing small adjustments with a full transition in the Fall Season of 2026. This staggered approach helps ease everyone into the transition and gives coaches and families the time to adapt.
- Your child is more likely to play with classmates and friends from school
- Teams will stay together more consistently year after year
- Players experience a stronger sense of belonging and confidence
- Development focuses on learning, enjoyment, and long-term growth, not early physical maturity
- All clubs, including Palmer Divide, will fully adopt the new school-year system for the Fall 2026 season.

How are we putting players first?
- We’re committed to putting your child’s development, experience, and social connections at the center of any changes we make.
- For our younger age groups, we’ll begin early alignment with the new guidelines so the process feels natural and seamless.
- For high school age players, we will honor individual circumstances. No one will be required to move down a group if it doesn’t make sense for their development or experience.
- Every change will be communicated well in advance. You’ll get clear timelines, evaluation procedures, and guidance before anything is official.
Why This Is Better for Player Development
Research and decades of coaching experience show that players thrive when they:
- Feel socially comfortable on their team
- Are not consistently the youngest or smallest in their group
- Develop at their own pace
School-year grouping reduces early drop-out and supports a more healthy developmental environment, especially at younger ages.
Will Every Player Move to a School-Year Age Group?
No. Children develop at different rates physically, emotionally, and technically. Palmer Divide Soccer Club will continue to evaluate players individually and place them where they can best learn, contribute, and enjoy the game.
Our priorities are development, confidence, and love for soccer.
We appreciate your partnership as we prepare for this important change. As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out with concerns or suggestions. Our goal is to create the smoothest, most player-focused transition possible.
Thank you for being part of our Palmer Divide Soccer family!
